M-Power.
Utilizing an M TwinPower turbocharged engine, the M5's powerplant has received a thorough overhauling that results in it providing 600 horsepower at 5,700-6,600 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque from a barely-breathing 1,800 rpm all the way up to a peak 5,700 rpm. Drive protocols range from basic Efficient to Sport or Sport Plus modes with remapped throttle, transmission and suspension protocols, which gear the new BMW M5 for a variety of street or track situations.
For packaging efficiency, the M5's TwinPower turbochargers are nestled in the valley between the cylinder heads. Fed constantly by the twin exhaust manifolds, they offer an intoxicating audio track that can be adjusted depending on drive mode or via the exhaust baffle control (M Sound Control button).
At the wheels.
Power is transferred from the crankshaft to the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Rear-biased, it only engages the front drive system when the rear is unable to deliver the proper amount of torque needed. The transfer case splits up the torque as needed, based on sensors that react almost instanteously to new inputs based on current road conditions.
The new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic has been configured for high performance usage that is still suitable for around-town driving. For those who enjoy rowing it themselves, they can do so with a newly designed sequential gear selector or via the steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers on the M badged steering wheel. Between the all-wheel-drive M xDrive and the eight-speed gearbox, the M5 is capable of near-supercar acceleration with a zero to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and zero to 124 mph (200 kph) in 11.1 seconds.
Using BMW M Drivelogic, the M5's transmission can be remapped according to the desired driving style. Mode 1 is suitable for around town, normal driving while Mode 2 steps up for quicker shifts. Drivelogic Mode 3 is for sport and enthusiast driving during track days and similar exercising.
There's also manual mode, which enables drivers to shift it with the gear selector using no automatic gear changes. As a result you are able to manually shift your BMW M5 as though equipped with a standard manual shifter.
Downshifting into a turn, followed by acceleration at the apex, has never felt so fun. It's totally possible in this new BMW M5, which is a family sedan that thinks it's a supercar.
