The new SUV is equipped with a small-but-mighty 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine that manages to make 248 horsepower with maximum torque at 258 lb-ft or torque. This powerful, yet extremely economical inline four-cylinder is mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission for quick starts and smooth drivability. But that doesn't mean it's a slug: Zero to 60 mph comes in just 6.0 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph.
The halo vehicle of the BWM X3 lineup is the M40i. Featuring best in segment acceleration, it is powered by a 3.0-liter M Performance TwinPower Turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that produces 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission with Launch Control, that has been beefed up for the added torque, it is both the segment leader in acceleration, and capable of a 0-60 excursion in 4.6 seconds. Speed is limited to a respectable 155 mph.
