The BMW M5. It has been a cult classic for years, and is essentially a culmination of the fastest BMW offers. It's almost a four-door, five-passenger version of the BMW M6 hot rod. So similar in layout, yet bigger inside, you can take up to four passengers -properly equipped- for a hot lap on track day at your local race-o-rama. In addition to its on-track prowess, it will offer years and miles of driving pleasure as long as it is properly maintained.
At 60,000 miles, that's the point we think that your BMW of Wyoming Valley M5 is just getting started. As before, it's time for an oil and filter change but we are mixing it up a bit to include an engine and in-cabin filter change, too. It's also time for another fuel filter, followed by an inspection of key steering and suspension parts, a tire rotation and more. At the very end, the service mechanic will top off the fluids, perform a multi-point inspection and make sure there are no outstanding service campaigns or recall notices.
That's why designers and engineers at BMW have compiled a schedule detailing all the services required by your new M5 Sport Sedan from BMW of Wyoming Valley. The scheduled services make sure that your Ultimate Driving Machine remains just that: The Ultimate Driving Machine.
Your M5, like all BMW vehicles, uses mileage intervals and the BMW brand's Condition Based Service (CBS) system to determine the proper time to change critical components and fluids on your vehicle. The system combines sensors with algorithms to determine when time is up for the oil and other components and fluids in your vehicle.Â
The system takes into consideration the engine speeds and loads, rotations, the expected lifespan of components and fluids, and your M5's actual accumulated mileage. When the system reaches a specific threshold, it alerts you through a light on the dashboard instrument panel.
We're not sure about you, but if we were driving to and from work each day in an M5, we would, of course, want to take the long way home, in order to have as much fun behind the wheel as possible.Â
But if that long way includes mountainous routes with heavy stop and go traffic or trips through dry, arid desert regions, we encourage you to change your synthetic oil and oil filter at the 5,000 mile mark, instead.Â
Although synthetic motor oil has a much longer life than conventional oil, the service mechanics at BMW of Wyoming Valley recommend changing it sooner because of the added stress such extreme driving can cause.

Although the CBS system may not alert you about an oil change until later than expected, please remember there are other items that need changing and replacement at other times.Â
For instance: Even though your oil may not need changing at 5,000 miles, your tires need to be rotated, your coolant refreshed, and your transmission fluids and other expendables may need tending to before that. It's for that reason that your Wyoming Valley service department perform those services every 5,000 miles so we can examine your BMW M5 to guarantee it is operating in top form.
Your M5's 10,000 mile service, will involve another oil and filter change. At the same time, they will rotate your tires to help promote even tire wear at all four corners. Other critical checks are performed including an integrity check of the cooling system and a replacement of the coolant as needed. These expert BMW technicians will go further by checking the M5's steering system, suspension components, the brake pads and rotors, and a topping off of fluids.
Finally, your Wyoming Valley service advisor will clear your vehicle of any outstanding recalls or service campaign notices. Continue to have your tires rotated every 5,000 miles along with any other services that your Wyoming Valley mechanics recommend. Before you know it, you will be at the 20,000 mile interval which repeats many of the same tasks outlined in the 10,000 service.Â
The BMW mechanics will perform duties including oil and filter changes, rotating the tires, and other inspections, all with the goal of keeping your BMW M5 operating at peak form.

At 30,000 miles, the CBS system will alert you that it's time for a replacement of your M5's synthetic oil, filter, and the tire rotation. The CBS system also keeps track of brake wear and will alert you that it's time for a brake pad or brake fluid change. Maybe both. Regardless, the BMW M5 owner's manual suggests an initial change at the 30,000 mile mark and then every 60,000 miles afterwards. The BMW M5 owner's manual also suggests a change of the fuel filter to coincide with the 30,000 mark, as well.

Other Essential Services:
Just a couple more things: Have you noticed your wipers leaving a cloudy residue being left by your Windshield Wipers? That's because your wipers are being abused. We already know windshield wipers get no respect. Wipers live in the elements, where heat and humidity do their best to shorten the life of the blades. The same in the cold of winter where the brutal cold can snap them like a chicken bone. But they are critical to the safety of you and your vehicle. That's why we recommend a change every six months.Â
The Parts and Service department at the BMW of Wyoming Valley will have the right-sized factory-approved replacements that will have your M5 windshield spotless in no time.Â

We offer All-wheel-alignment which our mechanics will tell you is one of the most critical "fixes" you can have performed on your Wyoming Valley BMW M5 vehicle. It's money well spent which will help to keep your car heading towards its "true north," while at the same time helping you to keep your tire expenses down.Â
But how will you know you need such a service? Simple: If you find yourself steering your car back to center while heading down a straight lane of highway, that's one sign. Drifting left or right is another. Those are prime examples of an M5 in need of an all-wheel alignment.Â
At BMW of Wyoming Valley, our service experts suggest having at least one alignment per year, as there are lots of road hazards and irregularities that can cause the alignment to fall out. May we also suggest having your tires rotated first? It will help to equalize the tire wear pattern for each tire. Your BMW M5 owner's manual will have more information.
Speaking of Tires: If the tires on your BMW M5 are low on tread, just how is all that M-power going to be able to get to the ground? Your M5 deserves better than that. Maybe it's time for the Abe Lincoln Penny test. And best of all, it's something nearly everyone can afford.Â
To see if you have enough tread, place a Lincoln Head penny inside a tire's tread. By placing "Honest Abe" head-first into the groove of the tire tread, you can see if Honest Abe sinks in to his ears or more.Â
If so, there is plenty of tread. If you see a little bit of air above Abe's hairline, it's time to get replacements. It's a line that we have made famous but as the saying goes, "Bald is for eagles, most babies and some old men, but not your tires."
Our BMW Parts department has the replacement tires your M5 needs, all at competitive market prices.Nobody knows your M5 the way the factory-trained pros at BMW of Wyoming Valley do. Call for an appointment today. Our team of service experts are waiting to see you.
