Engines and Transmissions
Power comes in a variety of forms for the BMW 3 Series. The base BMW 330i is powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. In base form, it's a rear-wheel drive package. The BMW 330i xDrive is the all-wheel drive version.
The 330e is the 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), available in either RWD or xDrive all-wheel drive versions. It also sports a 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood but is outfitted with an electric motor and lithium ion battery kit. This package delivers 288-hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The sport-oriented M340i includes a turbocharged inline six-cylinder making 382-hp and 369 lb-ft. of torque. It is matched to a 48-volt mild hybrid system for rapid access to its peak powerband.
All of the previous models use an 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver power to the pavement.
The race-inspired M3 sedan is also powered by an inline six-cylinder engine. But unlike the M340i, it is naturally aspirated. In this non-hybrid form, it delivers 473-hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. If that's not enough, step up to the M3 Competition which uses a tuned version of the same engine delivering 503-hp and 470 horsepower.
The regular M3 delivers with a six-speed manual transmission. The M3 Competition is exclusively available with the 8-speed automatic transmission. It is standard with rear wheel drive, although an M-tuned version of the xDrive all-wheel drive system.
Designed with Purpose
The BMW 3 Series feature an exterior body that just works. It's a conservative, yet progressive look, which has stood the test of time. The 3 Series models have a traditional stance, and standard size grille intakes, while the M3 versions feature large grille openings for additional cooling. The M3 models sit lower for enhanced performance and handling.
Add to that the fact the M3 models feature carbon fiber roofs that help to lower the vehicle's center of gravity, with a substantial weight savings as the bonus. At the rear are a pair of black-trimmed exhaust finishers and an under bumper air diffuser for improved aerodynamics.
